YOGA & 108 Sun Salutations

On Friday the 17th of June 2016 we will be doing our 2nd 108 Sun Salutaion and Meditation event at HLC.

So what is this 108 all about you say? If you practice yoga you would be very familiar with a sun salutation ……. But you may not know why we are practicing 108???

The number 108 has many important and symbolic meanings in diverse disciplines ranging from mathematics to religions and spiritual practices, martial arts and yoga.

I will mention just a few but feel free to do your own research as it’s quite interesting-

~108 is the number of names for Buddha

~108 is the number of names for Shiva

~108 is the number of beads on a Catholic rosary

~ Mala refers to prayer beads customarily used in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Mantras and chants are counted bead by bead on Malas. Buddhist malas traditionally have 108 beads.

~There are said to be 108 energy lines converging to and from Anahata, the heart chakra.

~The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

So as you can see the number 108 has long been considered a sacred number.

My first experience of practicing 108 Sun Salutations was a very sacred moment. The energy in the room was electrifying and inspiring. I was very apprehensive to begin with and thought that it would be a boring journey but boy was I wrong. As we practiced our 108 salutations every individual in the room travelled together harmoniously, breathed together beautifully and stayed on the same path together to the very end. Our last 8 salutations were practiced without any verbal guidance and we all moved on the wave of each other’s breath…

So special and so sacred to know that with each other we can and we will make it through many challenging situations.
